Gastric Sleeve Post Surgery Guide
Get the optimal results out of your gastric sleeve surgery
After your Gastric Sleeve procedure, you will have an initial recovery period and specific steps to follow to promote healing and achieve the best results.
Here’s an overview of what to expect and the post-Gastric Sleeve care you should follow:
Immediately After Your Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Following your gastric sleeve surgery, it’s normal to experience some discomfort, particularly around the incision site.
The cut (incision) made by your surgeon may be sore for several weeks as it heals.
If you have dissolvable stitches, they will dissolve on their own, but if you have standard stitches, these will be removed during a follow-up appointment.
- Tip: Hold a pillow over your incision site when coughing or taking deep breaths to reduce discomfort.
10 Days After Your Gastric Sleeve Surgery
On the 10th day after your surgery, an appointment will be made for you at one of the Auralia Clinics, so the sutures can be removed by the Auralia surgeon or nurse.
Any questions regarding when you can resume physical exercise, housework etc. will be answered at this appointment.
Use Bio-Oil™ twice a day on the scar for six weeks.
The next appointment will be about 4 weeks from your surgery.
Your After Gastric Sleeve Surgery Checklist
Even years after your surgery, you’ll still be able to schedule free follow-up appointments with your Auralia surgeon. This ongoing support is a key part of ensuring you maintain your health and weight loss goals in the long term.
Diet and nutrition
Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial to support your body’s healing process.
You will need to follow a structured diet plan as advised by your surgeon or dietitian, which typically starts with liquids and progresses to soft foods before returning to a more normal diet.
Key focus: High-protein, low-sugar, and low-fat meals will help in recovery and prevent complications.
Activity restrictions
In the early weeks of recovery, avoid intense physical activities such as cycling, jogging, or heavy lifting.
This allows your body to heal and prevents strain on your incision site.
Heavy lifting: Refrain from lifting anything over 5 kilograms for at least six weeks post-surgery.
Follow Your Doctor's Advice
Always adhere to your doctor’s advice regarding when it’s safe to resume regular activities, including work and light exercise.
Rest and Listen to Your Body
Even if you feel well enough to return to work or your usual activities early, ensure that you allow adequate rest to promote healing.
Sleep position: Sleep on your back for the first few weeks to avoid placing pressure on the abdomen.
Additional Tips
Hydration: Drink plenty of water—around 2 litres per day—to support healing and prevent dehydration.
Sun protection: Avoid exposing your scars to direct sunlight or tanning beds for at least six months, as this can cause discolouration.
Skin care: Avoid using fake tan on or around the incision site for the first few months to prevent irritation.
What to Avoid After Your Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Here are some key activities and habits to avoid during your recovery:
Fast food and unhealthy eating: Avoid high-fat, sugary foods as your body adapts to the smaller stomach size.
Smoking: Do not smoke for at least four weeks after surgery, and ideally, quit altogether.
Heavy exercise: Refrain from any strenuous physical activity, including running, for the first six weeks.
Panic Googling: Trust your medical team at Auralia Clinic for advice instead of searching for solutions online.
Missing appointments: Ensure you attend all follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and address any concerns.
Sleeping on your stomach: Avoid sleeping on your stomach for the first three weeks post-surgery to protect the healing incision.
Baths and swimming: Do not bathe, use jacuzzis, or go swimming for at least five weeks after surgery.
