You're Not Alone. We See This Every Week.
If you’ve had bariatric surgery in the past and things haven’t gone as expected, you may be feeling frustrated, or anxious. You might be wondering if the problem is your fault, or whether anything can be done to help.
You’re not alone, and this is not your fault.
Many patients experience challenges after bariatric surgery. Sometimes the original surgery wasn’t performed optimally. Sometimes anatomy changes over time. Sometimes weight regain happens despite your best efforts. And sometimes complications develop that need expert assessment and correction.
Common reasons patients come to us for revision surgery:
Weight regain You lost weight initially but have regained a significant amount, and you’re struggling to lose it again despite following dietary guidance.
Inadequate weight loss You never achieved the weight loss you expected after your original surgery, despite commitment to the programme.
Complications from previous surgery You’re experiencing reflux, dumping syndrome, nutritional deficiencies, strictures, internal hernias, or other complications that are affecting your quality of life.
Gastric band problems Your gastric band has slipped, eroded, or is causing discomfort and needs removal or conversion to another procedure.
Surgery performed abroad You had surgery abroad and are struggling to access aftercare, or complications have developed and you need expert local support.
Pouch or sleeve dilation Your stomach pouch or sleeve has stretched over time, reducing the effectiveness of your original surgery.
If any of this sounds familiar, we can help.
Our revision surgeons have extensive experience assessing complex cases and guiding patients toward the right solution. Whether that’s revision surgery, additional support, or another approach, we’ll give you honest, expert guidance.

Katrina's Weight Loss Story with Auralia

I have struggled with my weight my entire life, and it had completely spiralled out of control, peaking at 26st 7lbs.
1 year later and almost 12st less, I can safely say that having this surgery almost certainly saved my life. I had high BP and was pre-diabetic, both of which has been comfortably reversed without medication.
I will be forever grateful to my team at Auralia for giving me back the control over my life that I had lost, and I can’t recommend them enough.Katrina Darcy

Types of Weight Loss revision Surgery We Perform
Gastric sleeve revision
If you had a gastric sleeve and have experienced significant weight regain or sleeve dilation, revision may involve re-sleeving (creating a smaller sleeve again) or converting to a gastric bypass.
Gastric bypass revision
If you had a gastric bypass and are experiencing weight regain, inadequate weight loss, or complications, revision may involve reducing the size of your stomach pouch, revising your intestinal connection, or correcting anatomical issues.
Gastric band removal
If your gastric band has slipped, eroded, caused complications, or is no longer effective, we can remove it. Many patients choose to convert to gastric sleeve or gastric bypass at the same time.
Gastric band to sleeve or bypass conversion
If you’re having your band removed, converting to a sleeve or bypass at the same time (or in a staged approach) may provide better long-term weight loss results.
Revision after surgery abroad
If you had bariatric surgery abroad and are experiencing complications, inadequate results, or lack of aftercare, we can assess your situation and recommend the appropriate revision or corrective procedure.

Thinking About Weight Loss Surgery Abroad?
Compare the full picture before you travel. Your result depends on care before, during, after surgery.
Recognition of life-threatening complications
Auralia (Ireland)
Your team can examine you immediately if pain, fever, fast heart rate, or vomiting develops, critical for early detection of leak/bleed/PE.
Abroad
Problems often appear after you fly home. Delays in assessment increase the chance of severe outcomes.
Emergency pathways & re-admission
Auralia (Ireland)
Direct re-admission to the operating surgeon’s team, with access to theatre, imaging, and bariatric anaesthesia.
Abroad
You present to an ED with no continuity, the local team may not have your operative details or the original surgeon.
Post-op travel risk (clots & pulmonary embolism)
Auralia (Ireland)
No long-haul flights after surgery; DVT prevention and mobilisation are coordinated by your team.
Abroad
Early post-op flying increases clot risk. Some providers still discharge to travel within days.
Standards, governance & accountability
Auralia (Ireland)
ISO and CHKS certified systems, audit, infection control, and clear regulatory oversight.
Abroad
Standards vary by country/provider, verification can be difficult, and accountability may be unclear once you return.
Structured aftercare (the biggest driver of long-term success)
Auralia (Ireland)
Dietitian-led plan, scheduled bloods, supplements, and direct contact with your bariatric team.
Abroad
Aftercare is remote or limited; gaps increase risks of deficiency, reflux issues, and weight regain.
The “Cold facts” box
Serious complications can look mild at first. Hours matter, distance adds delay.
Flying soon after surgery raises clot risk, prolonged sitting and dehydration make it worse.
Most surgical emergencies are safest with your original team, not a new hospital without your notes.
Cost comes second—but here’s the full picture
When you include flights, hotels, time off work, companion travel, and the real cost of a complication managed away from the operating team, “cheap” trips are rarely cheaper. In Ireland, you get a complete package, finance options, and accountable follow-up.
Your life and long-term health come first. Choose the pathway with immediate access to the team who operated on you.

Weight Loss Revision Surgery FAQs
Revision surgery is generally more complex than primary bariatric surgery due to scar tissue, altered anatomy, and the technical challenges of working on previously operated areas.
However, when performed by experienced revision surgeons in accredited facilities, revision surgery is considered safe for most patients. Your surgeon will assess your individual risk factors and explain the specific risks during your consultation. At Auralia, we have strict safety protocols and experienced surgical teams to minimize risks.
Weight loss after revision surgery depends on multiple factors, including the type of revision performed, your commitment to dietary and lifestyle changes, and why your original surgery didn't work.
Many patients achieve significant additional weight loss after revision surgery, particularly if the original issue was technical (such as a dilated sleeve or large pouch). However, if weight regain was primarily due to dietary habits, revision surgery alone may not solve the problem. Enhanced aftercare support is critical for success.
Your surgeon will discuss realistic expectations during your consultation based on your specific situation.
The cost of your weight loss revision surgery programme depends on which procedure is right for you and your individual needs. We provide a personalised quote after your initial consultation.
Auralia offers flexible finance options from €297 per month over 36 months.
Your programme price includes everything: consultations, anaesthesia, surgery, hospital stay, as much follow-up consultations as needed, premium Irish after care, dietitian support, the Auralia Weight Loss App, education classes, and insurance cover. No hidden fees.
Recovery from revision surgery can take longer than primary surgery, particularly for complex cases. Most patients stay in hospital for 1-3 nights. Initial recovery at home typically takes 3-4 weeks, during which you'll rest and follow a liquid diet.
Many patients return to desk-based work after 3-4 weeks. If your job is physically demanding, you may need 6-8 weeks off. Your surgeon will provide specific guidance based on the type of revision you have.
Yes. We regularly assess and operate on patients who had bariatric surgery abroad and are experiencing complications or inadequate results. We understand the challenges of accessing aftercare after surgery abroad, and we're experienced in managing these complex cases.
During your consultation, bring any operative notes, discharge summaries, or medical records from your original surgery if you have them. If not, we can often obtain information through imaging and endoscopy.
It's not too late. Many patients who seek revision surgery have regained significant weight, and revision surgery can help you lose weight again if performed for the right reasons.
However, your surgeon will want to understand why you regained weight. If it was due to technical issues with your original surgery, revision may be very effective. If it was primarily due to dietary habits, you may need enhanced support and behavioral interventions alongside or instead of surgery.
Your consultation is designed to assess your situation honestly and recommend the approach most likely to help you succeed this time.
You can choose. We offer consultations both in hospital (at our Dublin, Kilkenny, or Limerick locations) and Online via Zoom for your convenience. Many patients, particularly those from Northern Ireland or rural areas, find Zoom consultations more accessible.
Your surgeon can assess your suitability, explain your options, and answer your questions just as thoroughly via Zoom as in person. If any in-person assessments are needed, we'll arrange those at a later stage.
Not at all. A good percentage of our patients travel from Northern Ireland, and we've made the process straightforward.
You can attend your initial consultation via Zoom if travelling for an appointment is inconvenient. When it comes to surgery, you'll stay in hospital for 1-2 nights, so you only need to plan one trip. Follow-up appointments can be done via Zoom or in clinic, depending on your preference.
Many Northern Ireland patients choose Auralia for the peace of mind that comes with having their surgery and ongoing aftercare within Ireland, with full access to their surgical team if any concerns arise.
Yes. Even if you had your original surgery at another Irish facility, you can seek revision surgery assessment at Auralia. Bring any medical records or operative notes from your original surgery if available. Your surgeon will review your history and assess your current situation.
It varies depending on your availability, and any pre-operative assessments needed. However, Auralia has high capacity, and we can typically schedule surgery within 4 weeks of your consultation if you're ready to proceed.
If you need surgery quickly, let your patient coordinator know, and we'll do our best to accommodate you.
Absolutely. All consultations, medical records, and treatments are handled with complete confidentiality in line with Irish healthcare privacy regulations. Your information is never shared without your consent.
We understand that privacy is important, and we respect your discretion throughout your journey.
Yes, you're very welcome to bring a partner, family member, or friend to your consultation if you'd like their support. Many patients find it helpful to have someone with them.
If your consultation is via Zoom, your support person can join the call from the same location.
