How Do I Prepare
For Ear Correction Surgery?
Avoid aspirin, NSAIDs like Brufen and Volterol, Vitamin E supplements, and smoking to reduce bleeding risks.
It is advisable to take 1 gm vitamin C twice a day to improve wound healing.
On the day of your surgery, wear a button-up shirt that does not need to be pulled on or off over your head.
The Recovery Process From Ear Correction Surgery
The recovery from an ear pinning is usually very simple. Patients will wear a dressing to mould and apply pressure to the ears. This dressing helps to ensure the optimal outcome of the ear pinning procedure, and it is critical that patients not touch the bandages or get them wet. Three to five days after the ear pinning, the patient will return to have the bandages removed. Occasionally, patients will experience stinging, throbbing or aching in their ears after an ear pinning. Any discomfort is usually easily alleviated through the prescribed pain medication.
Making Your Desired Surgery Affordable
Auralia can help you spread the investment of your surgery, allowing monthly payments over 24 or 36 months.
Ear Correction Surgery FAQs
The specific methods used in ear pinning can vary slightly based upon the patient’s’ needs and desired outcomes. Generally, an ear pinning involves making an incision in the fold behind the ear, removing some skin and/or cartilage and pinning the ear with permanent sutures. In some cases, the surgeon performing the ear pinning will remove a sliver of cartilage from the ear and suture the gap shut, allowing it to fuse together closer to the head. This technique can also be used to perform an ear pinning that reduces the size of the ears in addition to repositioning them.
Most ear pinning procedures are performed under light sedation, or just local anaesthesia, although very small children may be given general anaesthesia to prevent fidgeting. Usually, an ear pinning takes around two hours to complete and the patient may return home immediately following surgery.
Complications from ear surgery/otoplasty are highly uncommon. However, all surgery, including cosmetic surgery, carries risks. Any potential complications will be discussed during consultation, and you will be given a copy in writing.
Having ear correction surgery will not affect your hearing in any way.
Ears are one of the first parts of the body to develop to full adult size, and the ear is fully developed at the age of 4. So, as long as children are healthy and not prone to chronic ear infections, at least four years old and are cooperative, they might be able to undergo the otoplasty procedure.
