Implant Removal (Explant Surgery)
Breast implant removal is a procedure to remove one or both implants, and it may also include removing part or all of the surrounding scar tissue capsule, depending on your reason for surgery. It’s commonly chosen for issues like capsular contracture, rupture, discomfort, changes in shape over time, or personal preference. Your surgeon will assess your implants, breast tissue, and goals to recommend the safest approach.
- Goal: Remove implants and restore natural breast shape
- Best for: Patients with Implant issues or no longer wanting implants
Implant Removal and Replacement
Implant removal and replacement removes your existing implants and places new implants during the same operation. This option is often chosen if you want to keep breast volume while addressing a problem such as implant ageing, rupture, capsular contracture, size change, or a change from textured to smooth implants.
- Goal: Replace implants and improve shape or comfort
- Best for: Old implants, rupture, size change, malposition, or contracture

Breast Implant Removal & Replacement FAQs
Breast implant removal and replacement is a procedure where your existing implants are removed and new implants are placed in the same operation. It’s often done to refresh your result, change size or type, or treat issues like rupture, hardening, or implant movement.
Our implant removal surgery price starts from €108/month and €180/month for removal and replacement.
The price includes everything you need to be covered, from hospital fees, anaesthesia, surgeon, implants, consultations, to aftercare and follow ups. No hidden extras.
Surgery is usually done through your previous scar where possible. The old implant is removed, the pocket is assessed, and scar tissue may be released or removed if needed. A new implant is then placed, positioned carefully, and the incision is closed, sometimes with a drain depending on the case.
Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection (seroma/hematoma), scarring, wound healing problems, and changes in nipple sensation. Implant-related risks include capsular contracture, malposition, rippling, rupture, asymmetry, and the possibility of needing further surgery in the future.
It is expected that you will experience some discomfort for up to 7 days. This is the same for all breast implant procedures. However, you will still be quite mobile from day 1 after surgery. Your surgeon will give you specific guidelines on what you should do, but as a general rule, you should remain mobile after your procedure.
You are not encouraged to go home and rest in bed. The more mobile you are, the faster your recovery will be. Any discomfort that you do experience can be resolved with medication, which your surgeon will prescribe to you.
You’ll see an immediate change, but swelling can mask the final shape at first. Most settling happens over the first 6 to 8 weeks, and it can take up to 6 to 12 months for the breasts to fully soften and reach their final look.
Walking is usually encouraged early, but you’ll need to avoid heavy lifting and upper-body training for several weeks. Many patients return gradually, with more intense exercise typically around 6 weeks, depending on healing and what was done.
Finally, after 6 weeks have passed from your surgery date, you can return to a more active exercise routine.
This depends on your dressings and closure, but many patients can shower after 48 hours, keeping incisions protected and avoiding direct pressure on the wound. Follow your surgeon’s exact instructions.
In most cases, no, because it’s usually considered cosmetic. Insurance may only help when surgery is clearly medically necessary and pre-approved, so it’s best to check your policy and we can provide supporting clinical documentation if relevant.
Yes, it’s often possible. During implant removal and replacement, the surgeon can move the implant from over to under the muscle (or from under to over) if it’s the best way to improve shape, correct malposition, or reduce issues like rippling and visible edges. Whether it’s recommended depends on your anatomy, your existing pocket, your tissue coverage, and the result you want, which we confirm during your consultation.
That’s common and you can still be assessed. Your surgeon will review your history, examine you, and may recommend imaging to confirm implant position and check for rupture or other issues.
