Breast lifts, or mastopexy procedures, are used to raise and reshape breasts that are sagging. Sagging breasts are often common in older women because as they age their skin loses elasticity which can cause breasts to lose their natural shape and their firmness.
A breast lift is designed to elevate the breasts and help give them a more youthful appearance. This type of surgery can be performed on its own, or alongside a breast augmentation surgery. If you’d like to learn more about breast implants you can check out our previous guide to breast augmentation in Ireland.
There are other factors that can cause women to have sagging breasts. This includes weight loss and childbirth. For a lot of women having a breast uplift is a great way to restore their confidence in their body and make them feel youthful again.
Many women get a breast lift so they can wear clothes that they used to, or so they can feel like they’ve got their ‘old’ body back.
If you’re thinking of getting a breast lift in Ireland take a look at our guide to learn everything you need to know about the procedure.
What happens during a breast lift procedure?
A breast lift operation involves a surgeon removing small parts of excess skin from each breast to help lift the bustline. This gives the patient’s breasts a more youthful appearance.
The surgeon will start by making the incision on each breast. The skin is then lifted and stitched into its new position. Afterwards, any excess skin is removed.
If there is a lack of natural breast tissue and you’re looking to get a fuller effect, you might be able to combine your breast lift procedure with breast augmentation.
Breast uplift surgery is usually carried out under general anaesthetic. It takes about 2 hours or so to complete, if you’re combining it with a breast implant surgery.
Patients generally stay in the hospital for about half a day and they’re closely monitored and cared for before they’re discharged.
Do you need to have implants inserted during a breast lift?
You don’t have to have implants during your breast lift surgery, but if a lot of volume has been lost you can opt for an implant to achieve a fuller breast shape.
What is the recovery process like for a breast lift?
After the patients have been discharged, usually on the same day as the procedure, a friend should drive them home. Patients are always advised to take the prescribed medication and get plenty of rest.
During the first week, there will be a bit of chest discomfort for 1-3 days. It’s normal for bruising or swelling to appear, and most patients return to work in about 7 days.
You’ll need to avoid any strenuous exercise while you’re healing too. If you’re worried or concerned about your recovery process, be sure to speak with your doctor.
What are the risks/complications of breast lifts?
With all surgical procedures there are risks involved, even for cosmetic surgery. All potential complications will be discussed in detail during the initial consultation. It’s advised you take a copy of the risks in writing too so you can study them at home.
Where is the scar going to be?
Depending on the method used to perform the procedure the scar placement differs. The scar will need time to soften and fade away and you won’t be able to see the final appearance of your scar until around a year post-surgery.
For the first month or two after your operation, the scar will appear red and slightly raised on the skin. If you have any questions about scarring be sure to ask your doctor.
How do I know if breast lift surgery is right for me?
Your surgeon will talk to you about all kinds of breast surgery and help you clearly understand the risks involved with each one. Only then will you be able to choose which operation is right for you. Your doctor can only guide you in making the decision, the final choice will be entirely up to you.
What’s the aftercare like for breast uplift surgery?
Cosmetic surgery aftercare is a crucial part of recovering successfully from surgery. The success of your procedure will completely depend on how well you look after yourself post-op which is why you must listen to everything your doctor tells you and take on board the aftercare plan they suggest.
